Floral traditions around the world: from antiquity to modernity

Flowers are an integral part of living environment from the creation of the world. Flowers are a concentrated blend of its amazing beauty. Flowers adorn human life, and are also symbols of cultures, traditions and rituals of different nationalities, emphasizing the uniqueness of their beliefs. In different countries, flowers carry a certain meaning and significance. Let's dive into the world of floral traditions and learn about some interesting customs existing in certain countries of the world.

Japan

Japan and flowers are inseparable. The Japanese love to look after the changing seasons and the blooming of different types of flowers, such as sakura, iris, lotus, chrysanthemum and others. Each flower has its own season and its own symbolic interpretation. For example, sakura is the personification of beauty, tenderness and brevity of life. Chrysanthemum is a symbol of the sun, happiness and longevity. The Japanese have a wonderful tradition – the spring Hanami holiday, when a lot of people gather under the trees strewn with blooming buds, inhaling their delicate aroma and enjoying their delicate beauty. It should be noted that the art of arranging flower arrangements – ikebana – comes from the land of the Rising Sun.

Mexico

In Mexico, flowers also play a significant role in culture and religion. Flowers that are honored with a great esteem are daisies, carnations, lilies, orchids and cacti. The most famous holiday associated with flowers is Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), which is celebrated in the fall. On this day, people remember their deceased relatives and friends, erect altars with photographs, food, drinks and always decorate them with bright flowers. They believe that floral scents attract the souls of the dead so that they can enjoy good memories, aromas and food left on the altar.

Greece

Let's move to Greece – a country where flowers very often serve the basis for myths and legends. Everyone remembers the legend about Narcissus or, for example, about the hyacinth flower, which grew from the blood of a beautiful young man who was killed by Apollo because of the jealousy of Zeus. The young man’s name was Hyacinth, hence the name of the flower, which became a symbol of beauty and the cycle of life and death in nature. In honor of him, the ancient Greeks in ancient times organize annual Hyakinthia festivals.

India

In exotic India, flowers have generally crossed the threshold of reality: they are a means of communication with deities. Hindus believe that flowers have spiritual powers and are able to convey people's prayers and wishes to the gods. Therefore, they use flowers for worship, meditation and sacrifice.

In India, flowers are also used to decorate houses, clothes and hair. Floral garlands worn around the neck by both men and women or hung on doors are especially popular.
The annual Holi festival or the «festival of colors» is also called the «floral festival». On this day, people throw bright flowers and colorful powders at each other, creating a joyful atmosphere and welcoming a new beginning and the joy of love.

Netherlands

And, of course, how can we not mention the Netherlands – the country of tulips and the largest producer and exporter of flowers in the world. In Holland, the annual Flower Corse (Bloemencorso) is held, when thousands of floral vehicles drive through the streets of colorfully decorated cities. It is an impressive sight to see millions of flowers bringing vibrant and colorful paintings to life on wheels. The famous Keukenhof is a royal flower park, where you can see millions of buds and blossoming inflorescences of different varieties and colors. This attracts a huge number of tourists to the country.
